The World Health Organization confirmed the virus involved is the rare Andes strain of hantavirus, one of the few known variants capable of spreading between humans through close and prolonged contact.

WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said the global risk remains low, while announcing that 2,500 diagnostic kits had been shipped from Argentina, where the voyage began, to laboratories in five countries to speed up testing for possible secondary infections.

Three passengers have died either during or after the voyage, which departed from Argentina last month.
