Two people have been killed and two others seriously wounded after a car drove into a crowd in the centre of the eastern German city of Leipzig on Monday, according to local broadcaster MDR, citing police.

Local broadcaster Radio Leipzig reported that a damaged Volkswagen SUV was seen speeding through a pedestrian zone, with a person reportedly on top of the vehicle at the time.

Eyewitnesses were also cited as saying several bodies were seen covered with sheets, and that a stabbing may have taken place.

German police later said on X that the driver had been arrested and no longer posed a threat following the incident.
