Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan has said other regional countries that share a common vision of peace could join the Mecca defence alliance formed by Türkiye, Pakistan and Saudi Arabia.

Fidan made the remarks in an article titled The Role of Regional Ownership in Our Foreign Policy: The Mecca Defence Alliance, published in the November issue of Anadolu's monthly magazine, AA Briefing.

He said Türkiye signed the Mecca Agreement for Joint Defence with Pakistan and Saudi Arabia because the three countries share a vision of “regional solutions to regional problems”.

The alliance aims to contribute to regional stability by strengthening deterrence, Fidan said.

“The Mecca Defence Alliance lies at the intersection of our strategic foreign policy priorities, which can be summarised as strengthening regional peace and stability, supporting development and prosperity, expanding the institutional framework of our foreign relations, and contributing to the transformation of the global system,” he said.

Fidan also said the global governance system was going through a turbulent period, with the Middle East at the centre of global challenges.

Ankara’s vision for regional and global developments

In his article, Fidan also assessed the institutional framework of Türkiye’s foreign relations, the global governance system and Ankara’s vision for the future.

The November issue of AA Briefing examines two simultaneous trends unfolding across a region stretching from Iran to the Horn of Africa.

It features analyses of the second maritime front of the US-Iran war through Yemen and the Bab al Mandab Strait, growing concerns about Russia in Europe, the security environment in the Black Sea and preparations for the UN Climate Change Conference (COP31), which Türkiye is set to host.

The magazine offers analysis of global and regional developments, combining expert assessments, original commentary, research and infographics on foreign policy, security, the economy, technology, the environment and social change.

It aims to provide policymakers, academics, researchers, media professionals and other readers with a comprehensive perspective on major developments, their implications and possible future scenarios.
