Siti Hasmah Mohamad Ali, the wife of Malaysia's longest-serving prime minister, Mahathir Mohamad, has died at age 100, the veteran statesman's office confirmed.
She passed away at the National Heart Institute in Kuala Lumpur, state news agency Bernama reported, citing the couple's son Mokhzani Mahathir.
A popular and respected figure in her own right, Siti Hasmah was widely recognised for her unassuming personality, warmth, and good humour, which often contrasted with her husband's blunt political style.
Throughout her decades as a prominent political spouse, she actively championed public health programmes, family planning initiatives, and numerous social causes across the nation.
A seven-decade partnership
The couple first met whilst studying at medical school in Singapore in the late 1940s.
Celebrating 70 years of marriage in August, they raised seven children, including businessman Mokhzani, social activist Marina Mahathir, and prominent politician Mukhriz Mahathir.
Mahathir, 101, frequently described his wife as the essential backbone of his political career and success, expressing profound admiration for her early determination to attain a university degree at a time when tertiary education was an exceptional rarity among ethnic Malay women.
