Tehran signals Iranian, US presidents could sign interim deal
Iran says a Trump-Pezeshkian signing ceremony remains under consideration as the two sides prepare for talks in Switzerland.

Iran has said that plans for a formal signing ceremony with the United States remain under discussion, with a memorandum of understanding aimed at ending months of conflict still expected to be signed in Switzerland later this week.

Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei said on Wednesday that the idea of a signing ceremony involving Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and US President Donald Trump “is on the table” and continues to be considered.

Speaking at a news briefing, Baqaei said there had been “no changes” to Tehran’s plans for the Switzerland meeting, where the agreement is scheduled to be formally signed on Friday.

The memorandum was announced on June 14 after Washington and Tehran said they had reached a framework aimed at ending the military conflict that has roiled the Middle East since late February.

Baqaei stressed that moving forward with the next stage of negotiations depends on the implementation of commitments already agreed by both sides.

According to the spokesperson, the memorandum includes a pledge to “permanently and immediately end the war on all fronts, especially in Lebanon.”

He warned that continued Israeli military aggression and the ongoing Israeli invasion of parts of Lebanon could constitute a violation of the agreement.

“This is extremely important for moving to the next stage,” he said, adding that Iran would take “necessary measures” if commitments are not upheld.

Baqaei also said the two sides have yet to negotiate the details of Iran’s nuclear programme but claimed Washington has committed to lifting all sanctions, including UN-related measures and both primary and secondary US sanctions.

Under the framework, Iran and the United States have agreed to hold negotiations for 60 days in pursuit of a final settlement, while the US naval blockade is expected to end within 30 days, according to Tehran.

The spokesman also said maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz would be restored under a timeline agreed by both sides, with Iran and Oman coordinating management of the strategic waterway.

The agreement is seen as a major diplomatic breakthrough after months of conflict triggered by US-Israeli strikes on Iran and subsequent Iranian retaliation across the region.
