The UN chief Antonio Guterres has warned that Gaza is still facing "profound uncertainty and immense human suffering … despite the ceasefire announced 8 months ago".

His comments come as Israel has continued to launch deadly attacks on Gaza despite the US-brokered truce that came into effect in October.

According to the Palestinian Health Ministry in Gaza, at least 981 Palestinians have been killed and 3,104 wounded in Israeli attacks on Gaza since the "ceasefire" began.

At least 72,991 Palestinians have been killed by Israel since its genocide in Gaza began in 2023.

Protection demands for children

Meanwhile, the UN Children's Fund (UNICEF) has called on Israel "to take decisive action to protect Palestinian children" after a series of recent attacks killed and wounded several in the occupied West Bank and Gaza.

Edouard Beigbeder, UNICEF's Middle East and North Africa director, pointed to a recent shooting near Hebron in the occupied West Bank that killed a seven-month-old boy, as well as the killings of eight children in Israeli attacks on Gaza at the weekend.

"We cannot let this become the new normal – children losing their lives to violence should cause global outrage and must be condemned at every level," Beigbeder said in a statement.

"In the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, the killing and injuring of children and their families, forced displacement, and attacks on schools, homes, water and health infrastructure show a flagrant disregard for children's rights."

He urged the Israeli authorities to ensure "transparent, credible, and robust investigations, as well as accountability whenever children are killed or maimed".

Rights groups have documented Israel's systemic failure to investigate Israeli troops or settlers involved in attacks against Palestinians, including children.
