Six US House Democrats have prepared legislation to be formally introduced that would impose targeted sanctions on individuals and entities involved in constructing or expanding illegal Israeli settlements and outposts across the occupied West Bank and Gaza.

Representatives Joaquin Castro, Madeleine Dean, Don Beyer, Greg Casar, Sara Jacobs, and Veronica Escobar are co-sponsoring the draft measure, titled the Stop the Settlements Act.

The proposed legislation seeks to halt the construction of new illegal settlements alongside the physical expansion of existing illegal Israeli outposts.

It aims to achieve this through punitive financial sanctions and a strict ban on the importation of commercial goods produced within illegal Israeli settlements and outposts located in the occupied Palestinian territories.

Countering 'land grab'

Backers of the bill argue that the proposed economic measures are essential to halt the continuing displacement of Palestinians and protect an enduring diplomatic pathway towards a negotiated political resolution where both Israelis and Palestinians can exercise self-determination.

Castro, one of the primary sponsors, issued sharp criticism against the current Israeli administration and its accelerating expansion policies across the occupied West Bank.

"Under [Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin] Netanyahu's government, settlers are engaged in a violent land grab that's ripping Palestinians from their land," Castro said in an official statement.

The Texas Democrat characterised the relentless expansion of settlement infrastructure as one of the primary obstacles to regional peace, urging the US Congress to deploy legislative sanctions directly against those facilitating settlement growth.

"Democrats must face this with urgency—act now or watch the prospect of Palestinian self-determination slip away forever," Castro warned.
