US President Donald Trump has addressed the nation in a late-night news conference, confirming he is safe following a "serious" security incident at the White House Correspondents' Dinner.

Trump stated that the man charged a security checkpoint with many weapons but is now "totally subdued and under control."

He confirmed that one officer was shot but is "in great shape."

Trump revealed the suspected shooter is from California, describing him as a "very sick person."

When asked if he was the target of the attack, Trump replied: "I guess."

Trump calls for unity

"We had some great work done by law enforcement, but in light of this evening's events, I ask that all Americans recommit with their hearts and resolving our differences, peacefully," he said.

"We have to resolve our differences."

The President praised the "really incredible" response from law enforcement, though he noted the events were traumatic for the First Lady.

He added that law enforcement agencies think the shooter was a "lone wolf" actor and that he does not believe the incident is linked to the war on Iran.

"We're going to reschedule. We're gonna do it again," Trump said.

"We're not gonna let anybody take over our society. We're not gonna cancel things out."
