US President Donald Trump has revealed that his representatives are engaging in "very positive" discussions with Iran that he believes "could lead to something very positive for all."
The optimistic shift in rhetoric comes as Trump also announced that American ships will begin escorting neutral foreign vessels safely of the Strait of Hormuz starting Monday morning.
Trump described the new naval initiative, named "Project Freedom," as a "humanitarian gesture" towards countries caught up in a conflict they have no part in.
He said ships from around the world asked the US for help after becoming trapped in the waterway.
Diplomatic tone shifts
"The United States Navy will use its 'best efforts' to guide their ships and crews out of the restricted passage," Trump said, adding that many of the stranded vessels were running low on food and essentials.
While the naval mission carries a warning that interference will be "dealt with forcefully," the focus shifted toward the potential for a diplomatic breakthrough.
Trump described the move as a goodwill gesture on behalf of the US and Middle Eastern countries, specifically including Iran in the effort.
The US president instructed his representatives to inform nations that their trapped vessels will be guided to safety and will not return until the area is deemed safe for navigation.
