The United States and China have agreed to establish a bilateral communication channel for artificial intelligence incidents, the White House has said.
The agreement was outlined in a White House fact sheet on Friday as US President Donald Trump and his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping concluded a summit that addressed the growing challenges posed by AI.
The two countries also established a “US-China Super Intelligence (SI) Dialogue” to exchange views on the technology’s risks and benefits, with the next exchange scheduled to take place by November.
According to the fact sheet, the leaders agreed to use the term “super intelligence” rather than “artificial intelligence”.
Keeping AI under human control
The announcements followed remarks from both leaders on how to approach the technology.
Before the summit, Trump wrote on social media: “Super Intelligence (SI) will be a big topic of discussion, but I want to leave it exactly where it is.”
“That is China’s position also,” he added, without elaborating.
Xi, meanwhile, urged the two countries to manage their rivalry and ensure AI remained under human control.
“We have both the capability and responsibility to develop and manage AI for good and ensure that the development of AI is always under human control,” he said at the White House on Thursday.
