Russian and Ukrainian drone strikes reportedly killed civilians and damaged infrastructure on Sunday on both sides.
The strikes came as Russians voted on the final day of a three-day parliamentary election, while Ukraine reported deadly attacks across the Kiev and Kherson regions.
A major Ukrainian drone attack overnight on Moscow and the surrounding region killed two people and injured 20 others, Russian authorities said on Sunday.
Mayor Sergey Sobyanin said the capital came under the “most massive” drone attack, claiming more than 1,600 Ukrainian UAVs were shot down since Saturday, including 450 while approaching Moscow.
He said several drones reached the Moscow Oil Refinery, damaging the facility and one struck a residential building, with no casualties reported.
“The unprecedented attack was clearly planned with the aim of disrupting the elections. The adversary failed to achieve this,” Sobyanin wrote on Telegram.
Moscow Region Governor Andrey Vorobyov said on Russian social media platform Max that the attack damaged civilian infrastructure and sparked fires across the region.
The most serious consequences were recorded in the Ramensky district, where a falling drone sparked a fire on the roof of a 21-storey apartment building, prompting the evacuation of 400 people, he said, adding that 20 vehicles were damaged.
A drone also struck a three-storey apartment building in Sofyino, killing one person and injuring five others, he said. Another person was killed in the Orekhovo-Zuyevo district.
Separately, Russia's defence ministry claimed its forces intercepted and destroyed 1,110 Ukrainian drones overnight across Russia, occupied Crimea and over the Black Sea, becoming "the most massive" attack since the beginning of the year, according to state news agency TASS.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed the attack, stressing “our long-range responses had a very significant impact in the Moscow region last night.”
“These are billions of dollars that sustain the war machine,” he wrote on X, adding that “sanctions were also imposed on a facility in the Voronezh region.”
Russian drone attack kills three children and a woman in Kiev region
Meanwhile, the death toll from an overnight Russian attack on the Kiev region rose to four, including three children, Kiev regional authorities said on Sunday.
A mother and her two three-year-old children were killed in Ukraine's Kiev region when a Russian drone strike hit a private home, the emergency service said.
Kiev region governor Tymur Tkachanko said a girl died in hospital after a separate drone strike in another district.
Tkachenko said the region endured more than a day of hostile attacks, with 31 sites damaged in five districts.

Zelenskyy also said that a Russian drone struck a monastery in the Kherson region, killing a clergy member and injuring four others.
In a statement on X, Zelenskyy said the attack was carried out on Saturday and expressed condolences to the families and loved ones of those killed and injured.
He accused Russia of launching more than 2,000 attack drones, 1,700 guided aerial bombs and 19 missiles of various types against Ukraine this week, damaging civilian infrastructure.
Russia and Ukraine have been attacking each other with drones continually in recent weeks.
