The Kremlin has thanked the US for inviting President Vladimir Putin to attend the upcoming G20 summit.
"We saw the reports in the media and the statements by the Secretary of State. We are grateful and appreciative for this invitation," Russian news agencies quoted Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov as saying on Wednesday.
"We will determine our position (on whether to take part in the event or not) and work it out through diplomatic channels," Peskov told reporters in Moscow.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said earlier on Wednesday that Washington had invited Putin to the G20 summit, scheduled to be held in Miami in December.
Rubio said the gathering would give Putin an opportunity to engage with US President Donald Trump and other world leaders.
He also said a possible new meeting between Putin and Trump had not been agreed and would require preparation, while noting that Washington remained open to such contacts.
Russia remains a member of the G20, while Putin has not attended an in-person summit of the group since 2019. He participated virtually in the 2023 summit.
Talks
Earlier, Reuters cited two sources as saying that Russian presidential envoy Kirill Dmitriev is heading to the US on Wednesday, where he will meet with Trump administration representatives Steve Witkoff, Jared Kushner and others.
The sources said Dmitriev's visit to the US, which was agreed upon with Russian President Vladimir Putin, will take place in New York during the UN General Assembly and will follow up on a meeting between Putin and US representatives at the Kremlin earlier this month.
One source said that the aim of the visit is to keep the Russia-US dialogue and the peacemaking effort going.
During his previous contacts with Witkoff and Kushner, Dmitriev negotiated a sanctions waiver for seaborne Russian oil aimed at stabilising the global energy markets as well as several prisoner exchanges between Russia and the US.
