Several civilians were killed and injured on Saturday after Yemen’s Houthi group launched ballistic missiles at residential areas in the densely populated central city of Marib, an official and a government-aligned broadcaster reported.
Assistant Information Minister Fayyad al-Numan said on US social media company X that a new Houthi missile struck residential neighbourhoods in Marib, with initial reports indicating civilian deaths and injuries, including internally displaced people.
Government-aligned Aljoumhouriya TV also reported civilian casualties following renewed Houthi ballistic missile attacks on residential areas in the city.
Al-Numan said earlier, citing sources, that the Houthis had targeted civilian sites in Marib with several ballistic missiles.
Sources reported explosions in the province that they believed were caused by missiles launched towards Marib, according to al-Numan.
State-run Saba TV reported that the Houthis resumed shelling Marib, striking it with three ballistic missiles, while Aljoumhouriya TV said three large explosions rocked the city.
There was no comment from the Houthis on the reported attacks.
Yemen has witnessed a relative lull since April 2022 in a war that began nearly 12 years ago between government forces and the Houthis, who have controlled the capital, Sanaa, and other cities and provinces since September 2014.
Fighting has resumed in several provinces in recent weeks, however, including Marib, Al-Jawf, Al-Dhalea and Taiz, as the country continues to face one of the world’s worst humanitarian and economic crises.
A Saudi-led coalition backing Yemen’s internationally recognised government supports government forces, while Iran is accused of backing the Houthis. The Houthis announced a maritime blockade on Saudi Arabia in July.
