The Arab League has demanded an independent international investigation into the torture and systematic abuse of Palestinian detainees from Gaza held at Israel's Ramla Prison, insisting on accountability for those responsible.

In an official statement, the pan-Arab organisation condemned recurring assaults against prisoners in the facility’s Rakevet wing, reporting that the violence has left detainees with severe injuries and burns.

The league described the practices as flagrant breaches of international humanitarian law, including the Geneva Conventions and the Convention against Torture, declaring that they constitute crimes against humanity requiring legal accountability.

The league called for an immediate halt to all mistreatment and urged Israeli authorities to grant unrestricted access to the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and independent international monitors to document conditions and provide necessary medical care.

It further demanded the unconditional release of sick and wounded detainees and an immediate end to arbitrary detention.

Systematic weekend raids

The diplomatic appeal follows an October 27 report by the Palestinian Prisoners' Media Office documenting recurring violence against Gaza detainees inside the Rakevet wing.

According to the report, assaults take place regularly on Fridays and Saturdays, involving beatings with batons, tear gas, pepper spray, rubber bullets, and stun grenades.

The monitor also reported that prison guards enter cells with police dogs and forcibly transfer detainees to rooms without surveillance cameras to conduct assaults out of sight.

The office warned that the ongoing violence poses an acute risk to prisoners' lives, particularly those suffering from pre-existing injuries and chronic illnesses.

The Arab League urged the wider international community, the United Nations Human Rights Council, and the UN General Assembly to intervene decisively to protect Palestinian prisoners and dismantle the culture of impunity.

Ramla Prison, situated in central Israel, is administered directly by the Israel Prison Service.
