Pakistan confirmed on Thursday it had conducted "planned and calibrated" air strikes on neighbouring Afghanistan, where it says terrorists are based and coordinate attacks.

"Based on credible intelligence, selective targeting of terrorist camps and hideouts at two locations belonging to Fitna al khwarij, Fitna al Hindustan and their affiliates has been carried out in Afghanistan with precision and accuracy," the information ministry posted on X, referring to the terror groups it targeted.

The information ministry said its strikes were against terrorist hideouts in two locations and that “initial reports suggest” that 22 terrorists had been killed. Meanwhile, Afghanistan claimed nine women and children were killed and another 11 were wounded in the bombings.

The casualty claims from either side could not immediately be independently verified.

The strikes come amid repeated cross-border clashes between the two countries since tensions between them spiralled dramatically earlier this year. The two countries have longstanding disputes over terror activity along the border.

The United Nations Mission in Afghanistan said last week it had documented over 1,100 civilian deaths and injuries in Afghanistan from cross-border violence so far this year. Pakistan denies striking civilians, and says it targets terrorists who carry out attacks inside Pakistan.

Afghanistan denies harbouring terrorists.
