United States President Donald Trump has said that American forces have knocked out much of Iran's military but still need to "take care of" one or two remaining targets, including a suspected underground nuclear site known as Pickaxe Mountain.

Speaking to reporters at his Florida residence, Trump reiterated that Washington is in no hurry to resume strikes because it has decimated Iran's armed forces and atomic programme.

"We've knocked out their nuclear. We still have to take care of, I would say, one or two sites, but we can do that in 10 minutes," Trump said.

"You probably could look at Pickaxe Mountain, and you have to take care of that. We can do that all very quickly."

The Iranian government has repeatedly denied carrying out nuclear operations at the facility.

Diplomatic tracks

Trump maintained that diplomatic efforts to formally conclude the conflict—launched in late February by the US and Israel—were "going fine, but you know they're not very reliable."

The remarks follow earlier statements from Trump warning of prospective military action after the US midterm elections, having mused previously that he was weighing whether to "finish them off."

Earlier on Saturday, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that Trump has not finalised any decision regarding fresh strikes on Iran and emphasised that the United States remains receptive to a diplomatic resolution.

Concurrently, Iran's supreme leader warned Washington and Tel Aviv against initiating fresh bombardments following rhetoric threatening to resume hostilities post-elections.
