Activists aboard the Gaza-bound Global Sumud Flotilla have said that it was approached by frigates and warships while its communications were being jammed.

Drones were also flying over the flotilla, they said late of Wednesday.

Meanwhile, Israeli army sources told Israel's public broadcaster KAN that the army began taking control of the flotilla.

The sources added that Israel decided to intercept the flotilla hundreds of kilometres from its coast in an area near the island of Crete.

The flotilla, which departed from several countries including Türkiye, Spain, and Italy, includes more than 100 vessels and around 1,000 participants.

The flotilla is the second for the Global Freedom Flotilla after a previous attempt in September 2025 ended with an Israeli attack on the vessels in October of that year while sailing in international waters, and the detention of hundreds of international activists on board before their deportation.

The new voyage includes representatives of civil society organisations, activists and volunteers from various countries aiming to deliver humanitarian aid to Palestinians in Gaza.

The Global Sumud Flotilla was formed to break Israel's blockade on Gaza and deliver humanitarian aid.

It was created in 2025 by NGO representatives, activists, and volunteers from various countries.

Israel has imposed a blockade on Gaza since 2007, leaving about 1.5 million Palestinians out of roughly 2.4 million homeless after their homes were destroyed during the war.
