Türkiye's Black Sea Gas Fields Begin Delivering As Erdogan Offers Free Gas to Households
A trillion dollars. That's how much Turkiye's natural gas reserves in the Black Sea are estimated to be worth. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who flicked the switch on the country's first delivery of Black Sea gas, promised a limitless supply for households for the next month.
President Erdogan was on hand during the commissioning ceremony at the onshore facility where the first gas was delivered. Discovered back in 2020, the Black Sea gas fields off the Zonguldak coast, are expected to produce 10 million cubic metres of gas a day. Erdogan said that production would quadruple in the coming years. Ankara, which imports the vast majority of its energy needs, has been looking to lessen its dependence on foreign sources. Currently, Turkiye imports most of its natural gas from Russia, Azerbaijan and Iran. Once its Black Sea fields reach full capacity, its reserves are expected to meet approximately 30% of Turkiye's yearly consumption.
