This year's summit of the BRICS economic group in Johannesburg has ended with pledges of expansion and greater co-operation. The association of the world’s largest economies outside the Western world has emerged as a powerhouse club – and with growing incomes and an expanding skilled population, many argue that its members will soon dismantle the economic hegemony enjoyed by the West.
