America’s energy shift: The forgotten coal miners | My America

In this episode of My America, TRT World’s Eren Doguoglu travels to Kentucky to meet coal miners still working in one of America’s fastest-declining industries, as well as lawyers and doctors who represent the miners.

For generations, coal powered the state’s economy. Today, cheaper energy is taking over, jobs are disappearing, and entire communities are being reshaped.

Many miners are also living with Black Lung Disease, a lifelong illness caused by years of breathing in coal dust.

Donald Trump promised to bring coal back and revive mining jobs. But on the ground, many workers say those promises never materialised.

As the industry fades, coal country is left searching for a future; and wondering what comes next?

Some say coal is outdated and that the human cost exceeds any benefits.

Others argue coal can and should have a place in America’s energy future, if the right regulations are put in place to protect the miners.
