Former German spy chief arrested in historic espionage scandal

August Hanning, the former chief of Germany’s intelligence agency, Bundesnachrichtendienst (BND), has been arrested on suspicion of espionage and attempted treason. Prosecutors allege his former aide supplied him with around 2,000 BND documents, many of them classified, which Hanning used in private consulting work and dealings involving foreign intelligence officers. The case could become one of Germany’s biggest intelligence scandals since the Cold War.
