A Russian serviceman shot dead four people and wounded four others in a village near Sevastopol in occupied Crimea on Tuesday before being taken into custody, local authorities said.
Sevastopol Governor Mikhail Razvozhayev said the shooting occurred in the village of Khmelnytske, where the serviceman first opened fire on fellow soldiers.
One serviceman was killed and another wounded in the initial attack before the gunman allegedly turned his weapon on others.
Civilians among the victims
According to Razvozhayev, the attacker wounded three more people and killed three local residents — a 71-year-old man, a 59-year-old man and a 64-year-old woman.
The suspect was detained at the scene, while the injured were taken for medical treatment.
Investigators and forensic experts are working to establish the circumstances of the shooting, though authorities have not disclosed a possible motive.
The incident took place in Crimea, which Russia has occupied since 2014 following its illegal annexation of the peninsula, a move rejected by Ukraine and most of the international community.
