YBS, a PKK-linked armed group in Iraq’s Sinjar region, will disarm and integrate into the Iraqi army under the supervision of Prime Minister Ali al Zaidi, an Iraqi official said on Monday.

YBS is an offshoot of the PKK terrorist organisation.

Sabah al Numan, military spokesman for the prime minister, said procedures to reorganise military ties between the group and Iraqi security forces would begin on Monday, according to a statement carried by the Iraqi News Agency.

Al Numan said members of the group would be integrated into Iraqi security institutions, while responsibility for security on Sinjar Mountain would be transferred to the relevant federal government authorities.

He said the move was part of the government’s policy to bring all weapons under state control and would mark a new phase in security arrangements in the Sinjar district.

Al Numan also noted that Iraq’s constitution prohibits the formation of armed groups outside the country’s official armed forces.

Since the fall of Bashar al Assad’s regime on December 8, 2024, Syrian authorities have pursued wanted individuals and conducted security operations against armed groups as part of efforts to restore stability and bring all weapons under state control.
