Israel's far-right National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir has called for the dismantling of the Palestinian Authority (PA) after what Israel claims was a shooting attack near Hebron in the occupied West Bank that wounded five Israelis.

"We have to act before it's too late. The Palestinian Authority must be dismantled and demilitarised, and its terror infrastructure wiped out completely," Ben-Gvir said in a statement on Friday.

There was no immediate indication of any PA involvement in the incident.

The Israeli military said it killed two “suspected attackers” near Hebron and was continuing searches. Palestinian media, citing local and medical sources, reported that two Palestinians were killed by Israeli fire in Hebron after an armed incident.

The remarks come days before Israel's general election on 27 October. The vote is widely seen as a referendum on Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's leadership.
