Two people, including a child, have been killed and several others injured after a vehicle drove directly onto a sports field during a youth football match in Wichita, Kansas, police confirmed.

The incident occurred at the Stryker Sports Complex when the driver of a black Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck breached the grounds while a match was in progress.

Wichita police confirmed that one child and one adult died at the scene, without immediately releasing their identities or ages.

Emergency services, including police, fire, and ambulance crews, arrived swiftly to treat multiple casualties and transfer them to area medical facilities.

"We have two fatalities confirmed here at the scene and multiple other casualties with individuals transported to area hospitals," Wichita Police Captain Aaron Moses told reporters at the site.

"The vehicle involved in this incident remained at the scene. The driver of that vehicle is currently in our custody. There is no additional ongoing threat to the public from that driver."

Authorities confirmed that two minors were inside the vehicle at the time of the incident.

Police have taken the driver into custody, though investigators have not released the individual's identity or stated whether the vehicle was driven onto the playing surface intentionally.

Wichita Mayor Lily Wu urged the public to stay away from the sports complex whilst investigators conduct their work, describing the incident as heartbreaking.

"My thoughts and prayers are with everyone affected, especially the children and families involved," Wu stated in a post on social media.

The area remained cordoned off on Saturday evening as forensic collision teams worked to determine how the pickup truck entered the playing area.
