Türkiye has proposed a 229 percent increase in allocations for weapons, ammunition and other defence equipment purchases in its 2027 budget.

Vice President Cevdet Yilmaz outlined the spending plans on Friday at a ceremony marking the finalisation of the central government budget proposal at the Presidential Complex in Ankara.

“Allocations for purchases of weapons, ammunition, weapons systems and other defence equipment, which constitute a significant portion of defence spending in the National Defence Ministry's budget, have been increased by 229 percent,” he said.

The increase applies specifically to those procurement allocations, rather than total defence spending.

Including other defence expenditures, the proposal earmarks 2.206 trillion Turkish liras ($44.5 billion) for defence and a separate $25.2 billion for internal security.

Yilmaz said Türkiye had reduced its defence industry's dependence on foreign suppliers, describing developments over the past quarter-century as a revolution.

Current global conditions underscored the importance of the country's earlier decision to strengthen its domestic defence industry, he added.

Expanding domestic capacity

The planned increase in procurement spending comes as Türkiye expands its domestic capacity to produce weapons and military equipment, reducing its reliance on foreign suppliers.

The share of domestically produced content in Türkiye’s defence industry has risen from around 20 percent in 2002 to more than 85 percent, according to Anadolu.

The sector now spans combat drones, warships, fighter aircraft, air defence systems and precision-guided munitions, supported by more than 4,500 companies.

Defence and aerospace exports reached $10.05 billion in 2025 and totalled $5.79 billion in the first half of 2026.
