Hungarian Prime Minister Peter Magyar has confirmed that the deadly, tragic overnight road accident on Hungary's M3 motorway left 12 people dead and at least 20 others seriously injured.
The incident occurred around 1 a.m. local time near the Mezokeresztes exit, northeast Hungary, when a Polish tour bus carrying 57 passengers and two drivers swerved into a ditch and overturned.
“Twelve people lost their lives and at least 20 were seriously injured when a Polish bus veered into a ditch on the M3 motorway at night. My sincere condolences to the families of the victims,” Magyar said in a Facebook post.
Emergency services immediately activated mass-casualty response protocols, deploying search-and-rescue units to the scene.
Firefighters have rescued 35 people from a bus crash, with several passengers remaining trapped under the vehicle, local disaster management authorities said on Sunday, according to local media outlet 24.hu.
Local authorities set up a warming vehicle at the site, while a relief flight from Poland has been arranged to support the surviving passengers.
The affected stretch of the motorway between Mezokeresztes and Emod remains closed to traffic as investigators work to determine the cause of the crash.
