Gunmen have killed 11 people and wounded three others in a late-night shooting at a home in South Africa’s eastern KwaZulu-Natal province.
The attack took place in KwaMakhutha township, south of Durban, shortly before 11 pm local time (2100 GMT) on Tuesday, South African broadcaster eNCA reported, saying a pregnant woman was among the victims.
The victims were gathered inside the home when unidentified attackers stormed the property and opened fire.
Ten victims died at the scene of the attack, while another individual succumbed to injuries while being transported to a hospital.
The attackers set fire to a vehicle belonging to the homeowner before fleeing.
The motive remains unknown, and authorities have not announced any arrests or identified the suspects.
One of the world’s highest murder rates
A local resident told eNCA that he had grown up with some of the victims.
"It's shocking and sad. These are guys I grew up with. I can't believe it. It's like a movie," he said. "I've been staying here all my life, and I've never seen anything like this."
South Africa has one of the world's highest murder rates, with about 60 people killed each day in a country of around 62 million.
Legal and illegal firearms are widespread, and shootings are common, often fuelled by gang rivalry and competition between informal businesses.
In March, soldiers were deployed to violence hotspots across the country to support police efforts to tackle rampant crime, which President Cyril Ramaphosa has described as one of the biggest threats facing South Africa.
