US President Donald Trump has announced that Apple renamed Lake Ontario as "Lake America" on its maps application, declaring the alteration "complete, ratified, and binding" across both Apple and Google platforms.
"Apple Maps has just announced that it has changed the name of Lake Ontario to Lake America, so now that very important change of names, between Google Maps and Apple Maps, is complete, ratified, and binding," Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform.
The announcement came after Apple Maps users within the US observed the adjusted label, whilst the Canadian edition maintained the historic designation of Lake Ontario.
Users accessing the service internationally see both names displayed simultaneously.
Lake Ontario forms part of North America's five Great Lakes, straddling the international boundary between New York State and the Canadian province of Ontario.
Executive directives
Apple implemented the alteration after Trump issued an executive directive demanding the lake be renamed.
The presidential directive instructed the US Department of the Interior to adjust the entry across all federal databases and official materials within 30 days.
Google applied the identical modification in recent days.
In contrast, competing digital navigation service MapQuest stated it has no plans to adopt the revised name.
The designation has already been integrated into the US government’s official geographic naming register.
Apple previously made a comparable revision last year, updating "Gulf of Mexico" to "Gulf of America" following a similar directive from Trump.
