Abdul El-Sayed held a narrow lead in Michigan's Democratic Senate primary early Wednesday as voters across Kansas, Michigan, Missouri, Virginia and Washington chose nominees for key races ahead of November's midterm elections.
With 91 percent of ballots counted, El-Sayed was leading US Representative Haley Stevens, though The Associated Press had not yet called the race.
The winner will face Republican Mike Rogers in the race to succeed retiring Democratic Senator Gary Peters, who is not seeking re-election.
Stevens was backed by establishment Democrats, including Peters, while El-Sayed secured endorsements from progressive figures such as Senator Bernie Sanders and Representatives Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Rashida Tlaib.
US support for Israel and its war on Gaza emerged as a major issue in the Michigan primary.
Key races across the US
In Kansas, Republican Senator Roger Marshall comfortably won renomination and will face Democrat Adam Hamilton in November.
Democrat Cindy Holscher and Republican Ty Masterson, who was endorsed by President Donald Trump, advanced to the gubernatorial election to replace term-limited Governor Laura Kelly.
In Missouri, Democratic Representative Wesley Bell defeated four challengers, including former Representative Cori Bush, to secure renomination in the state's 1st Congressional District.
In Virginia, Republican Bert Mizusawa won his party's Senate nomination and will challenge Democratic Senator Mark Warner in November.
Democrat Shannon Taylor advanced in Virginia's 1st Congressional District, while former Representative Elaine Luria secured the Democratic nomination in the 2nd District to face Republican Representative Jen Kiggans.
In Washington state, Democratic Representatives Suzan DelBene, Marie Gluesenkamp Perez and Emily Randall advanced to the general election after the state's all-party primary.
