US military naval units operating in the area of the Strait of Hormuz came under Iranian missile fire, following an attack by the US military on an Iranian oil tanker, Iranian state media, citing an unnamed military official, has said.
US military vessels were forced to retreat after sustaining damage from Iranian missile strikes, it reported early on Friday.
It was unclear when the incident happened.
The US military carried out strikes on Qeshm port and Bandar Abbas, a Fox News reporter said in a post on X citing a senior US official.
The Pentagon did not immediately respond to a request for comment, but on Wednesday, the US military said it had disabled an Iranian-flagged oil tanker that was trying to sail towards an Iranian port.
The US military said that US forces hit the tanker's rudder with a F-18 fighter jet.
Blasts near Bandar Abbas, Qeshm Island
Meanwhile, several explosion-like sounds were heard near Bandar Abbas and Qeshm Island, Iranian media said.
Semi-official Fars News Agency reported that residents in the area heard multiple blasts near Bandar Abbas, adding parts of Bahman Pier may have been struck during an exchange involving Iranian forces and "enemy forces."
The Tasnim news agency confirmed explosions in the region, suggesting they could be linked to IRGC Navy warning vessels operating in the Strait of Hormuz.
Separately, Iran’s state broadcaster IRIB reported a blast at a pier on Qeshm Island, saying the incident is still under investigation.
Other Iranian news outlets also reported the blasts, while the Israeli military told AFP news agency it was "not aware of such" a strike.
Mizan news agency said the blasts heard in Qeshm were caused by air defences intercepting several small drones.
Tasnim news agency reported that two drones were brought down by air defences in Bandar Abbas.
