A Zionist activist, Hillel Neuer, openly bragged at a Jerusalem News Syndicate (JNS) forum about how UN Special Rapporteur Francesca Albanese and her husband were targeted, sanctioned, and made to suffer for their outspoken criticism of Israeli genocide in Gaza.

The moment has gone viral with backlash from social media users who are highlighting that such an aggressive speech gives a glimpse into the pressure campaigns that are routinely deployed against prominent supporters of Palestinian rights and the hold they have over US policies.

In the clip, Neuer criticises Albanese and references her past statements, including a 2014 Jewish lobby comment about US policy and her repeated accusations of Israeli genocide, apartheid, and related claims.

Neuer then highlights successful efforts to push for US sanctions against her, noting impacts on her finances, travel, and even her husband losing a World Bank leadership role after his own past posts surfaced.

The audience reacts with applause.

Critics on social media called it tone-deaf bragging that proves that a Zionist lobby has leverage over US government policies.

One widely shared post noted: “He got angry because Albanese said the pro-Israel lobby has power in Washington. Then he bragged about using that same power to punish her.”

Albanese, appointed in 2022 as UN Special Rapporteur on the occupied Palestinian territories, is one of the most outspoken international critics of Israel’s treatment of Palestinians.

Her reports highlight Israeli actions in Gaza such as "genocide as colonial erasure," systematic torture as "state policy," and broader illegal settler-colonialism. She has advocated for International Criminal Court warrants against Israeli leaders and corporate sanctions lists naming US tech and finance giants.

The US sanctions against her in 2025 came just days after she released a report titled “From the Economy of Occupation to the Economy of Genocide”, which detailed how dozens of corporations, including Amazon, Microsoft, Alphabet, and Palantir, are enabling and also profiting from Israel’s illegal occupation of Palestinian territories and genocide in Gaza by supplying surveillance systems, digital infrastructure, and weapons technology.

US sanctions and AIPAC influence

The US, under Trump, sanctioned Albanese in July 2025, citing antisemitism, terrorism support, contempt for the US and Israel, and "lawfare". This followed her reports naming US companies for complicity.

The sanctions froze her assets and restricted her US dealings and travel. A judge temporarily blocked them on free-speech grounds but an appeals court reinstated them. Her family decided to sue.

The American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) and similar pro-Israel groups are among the most active and well-funded foreign policy lobbies in Washington.

They routinely lobby hard for strong US-Israel security cooperation, military aid, and push back against critics of Israel, including at the UN. Groups like UN Watch, led by Hillel Neuer, openly campaigned against Albanese for years, highlighting her past statements, reports, and calls to sanction US companies.

The groups wield tangible influence through their donations, votes, and organisational networks in shaping relations with a key US ally. Pro-Israel advocacy contributes to a broader ecosystem that influences US policy towards Israel through campaign contributions, grassroots mobilisation and congressional pressure.
