Hamas leaders met on Sunday in Egypt with President Donald Trump's son-in-law and envoy Jared Kushner, who is seeking to push a Gaza plan rejected by Israel, sources with knowledge of the talks told AFP.

Hamas in the meeting reiterated its commitment to the deal while Kushner pushed for strong disarmament and an end to any future Hamas role in running Gaza, the sources said, speaking on condition of anonymity due to the diplomatic sensitivities.

Axios reported, citing sources, that former British Prime Minister Tony Blair and Nickolay Mladenov, the Board of Peace’s high representative for Gaza, also attended the meeting.

The talks formed part of a broader round of meetings involving a high-level Hamas delegation that arrived in Cairo on Sunday and met Egyptian intelligence chief Hassan Rashad to discuss implementing the Gaza ceasefire agreement.

Turkish, Egyptian and Qatari officials also took part in the discussions, which focused on translating commitments under Trump’s plan into verifiable operational steps.

Kushner is scheduled to travel to Israel on Monday for talks with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

In October 2023, the Israeli army launched a deadly offensive in Gaza that has killed over 73,000 people and wounded more than 174,000 others.

Despite a truce that has remained in place since October 2025, the army has continued its attacks on the Palestinian enclave, killing at least 1,260 people and injuring more than 4,100 others, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry.
