Flooding along the China-Nepal border has killed at least 1,308 people, with more than 5,600 others still missing, according to Nepalese authorities and Chinese state media.
Nepal’s disaster authority said on Friday that at least 1,287 people had been killed, while 5,083 remained missing.
Chinese state media reported 21 deaths and 541 missing in Tibet, bringing the combined toll from the August 26 glacial and mountain collapse to 1,308 dead and 5,624 missing.
More than 800 foreigners also remain unaccounted for, including trekkers in the Himalayas and pilgrims who had travelled to Mount Kailash, a site sacred to Hindus and Buddhists, in China’s Xizang Autonomous Region, also known as Tibet.
At least 17 bodies have also been recovered from rivers in India, which officials believe may have been carried downstream from Nepal. Those deaths are not included in the overall toll.
