Palestinian Civil Defence teams in Gaza have recovered the bodies of 11 Palestinians from beneath the rubble of a destroyed home in the Zeitoun neighbourhood south-east of Gaza City, the agency said.

Mohammed Abu Dan, executive supervisor of the Civil Defence file for recovering victims from beneath the rubble, said teams completed operations at the Sawafiri family home after conducting search and recovery efforts for three days.

The teams recovered 11 bodies and moved to another site in Gaza City to continue recovery operations.

Abu Dan noted that specialised teams will continue working as part of a wider project to retrieve the bodies of Palestinians buried beneath destroyed buildings across Gaza.

The recovery operations come as large numbers of victims remain trapped beneath buildings destroyed during Israel's genocide of Gaza, which began in October 2023.

Civil Defence teams face major difficulties due to limited equipment and resources.

On Saturday, teams recovered the remains of 21 Palestinians from beneath two homes destroyed by Israel while beginning searches beneath the Sawafiri home.

The operations form part of the second phase of a project launched by the Civil Defence on 19 July to recover missing bodies.

Civil Defence spokesman Mahmoud Bassal said the second phase includes 800 hours of operations across 147 destroyed homes in northern and central Gaza, believed to contain the remains of 1,072 people.

Bassal stated operations were being carried out with "very modest" resources consisting of one excavator, one bulldozer, and one truck, supported by the International Committee of the Red Cross.

Thousands remaining missing

The first phase began in November 2025 with 500 hours of work, recovering 333 bodies and remains from among 559 people missing beneath 54 buildings, whilst resource shortages prevented access to roughly 226 others.

In October 2025, Gaza's Government Media Office stated around 9,500 Palestinians were reported missing since the start of the genocide.

Israel's genocide has killed more than 73,000 Palestinians and wounded over 174,000, mostly women and children, whilst damaging about 90 percent of the enclave's infrastructure.
