More than 10,000 excess deaths have been reported across Europe during the record-breaking heatwave that engulfed western parts of the continent in late June, official data showed. The vast majority of the deaths were among people aged 65 and older.

Extreme temperatures can be fatal by causing heat stroke or worsening cardiovascular and respiratory diseases, with older people among the most vulnerable.
