Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has become the longest-serving head of government in the history of the Italian Republic, according to ANSA news agency.
Meloni reached the milestone on Friday after serving 1,413 days since taking office on October 22 2022, surpassing Silvio Berlusconi’s second government which lasted 1,412 days.
She is also now Italy’s longest-serving prime minister in the postwar history of the republic.
The milestone will be marked on Friday in the southern port city of Bari, where tens of thousands of people are expected to attend a celebration, according to Italian daily Il Sole 24 Ore.
Security measures are expected to be heightened amid concerns over possible protests, the newspaper reported.
Meloni’s Brothers of Italy party released a video celebrating nearly four years in office and highlighting what it described as achievements during her tenure, under the slogan: “The most stable government, the strongest Italy.”
Meloni also welcomed the milestone in a post on X, saying stability was “not a record to flaunt” but a condition that allows a country to plan, make decisions, honour commitments and command respect.
