US President Donald Trump said the United States would find and destroy Iran's enriched uranium when the region is calmer, as he announced that a deal to end the war would be signed on Sunday, even as Iran indicated that no signing was expected that day.
“At the appropriate time, when all is calm, we will go in and get the nuclear dust, buried deep under the powerful sunken granite mountains, thanks to our beautiful B-2 bombers and their brilliant pilots, and downblend and destroy it, whether in Iran or the United States,” Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform on Saturday.
Trump said that a deal with Iran is scheduled to be signed, and the Strait of Hormuz will be “open to all” immediately after that.
“The Deal is scheduled to get signed tomorrow, and immediately after it is signed, the Hormuz Strait is open to all,” Trump said.
Iran
Iran, however, said that the signing of a memorandum of understanding with the United States will not take place on Sunday but may happen in the coming days.
Foreign ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei said the Islamabad MoU focuses on ending the war on all fronts, including Lebanon, while the nuclear issue will not be discussed at this stage, even as Trump claimed Tehran no longer wants a nuclear weapon.
"We will have to wait and see about the exact time of signing the memorandum; although it will not be tomorrow, the possibility of this happening in the coming days cannot be ruled out," Baghaei added in statements carried by Tasnim News Agency.
He said Iran must be "cautious", citing what he called Washington’s “hesitation” in making comments about the process.
"Our negotiating team has no plans to travel to Geneva or anywhere else in the next two days," Baghaei said. "We have to wait and see when the exact signing date will be."
He stressed that the possibility of concluding the memorandum of understanding in the coming days “is very high", according to the IRNA news agency.
'Wall to a nuclear weapon'
Earlier, Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, whose country helped mediate a ceasefire in the US-Israeli war on Iran in April and has since been involved in negotiations, said a deal could be finalised within the next 24 hours.
Trump also noted his agreement with Iran is a “wall to a nuclear weapon”, claiming that Tehran no longer wants a nuclear weapon, “nor will they have one, either through purchase, development, or any other form of procurement.”
“Our relationship with Iran is a much different and better one than previous administrations have had,” he said, criticising the Iran policy of the previous administrations, and added that “no money will exchange hands” with Tehran.
He also expressed optimism about future relations with Tehran and the broader region.
“We look forward to working with Iran and the entire Middle East, long into the future. Hopefully, this process will all work out quickly, easily, and smoothly. If it doesn’t, we have the ultimate alternative, hopefully never to be used again!”
