Leading US news organisations have filed a lawsuit against the US government after the White House abruptly revoked their correspondents’ press credentials.
CNN, MS NOW and Politico announced the legal challenge in a joint statement on X on Monday, saying the administration had withdrawn their access over objections to their reporting.
“Without notice or process, the White House revoked our journalists’ credentials because it objected to our reporting,” the outlets said, warning that the move “threatens press freedom and the public’s right to independent journalism free from government interference.”
White House formally notified
The outlets said they had formally notified the administration of the lawsuit, which seeks to defend their rights under the First Amendment, the US Constitution's guarantee of a free press, and uphold the principle that federal authorities cannot determine what news organisations publish.
US President Donald Trump barred reporters from the three organisations from entering the White House compound last week. Security personnel turned their journalists away on Saturday morning following the directive.
Trump defended the exclusions, saying he was “tired of reading and seeing fake news” produced by the outlets and disliked “dishonest press.”
