Arab League Secretary-General Nabil Fahmy has urged US President Donald Trump to rein in Israeli policies toward Palestinians, warning that the Middle East is approaching a "moment of explosion."

In a statement ahead of Trump's planned meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Washington on Tuesday, Fahmy said the region was moving toward "a very dangerous point."

"The situation in the region is heading toward a very dangerous point and is approaching a moment of explosion on more than one level," he said.

Fahmy attributed the tensions to "the deadlock facing the Palestinian issue" and "the reckless escalation and brinkmanship policies that characterise the Gulf crisis."

Fahmy said all parties share responsibility for maintaining regional security and stability, but stressed that the US administration bears particular responsibility.

Call to preserve peace initiative

He called on Trump to "rein in the extremist ambitions of the Israeli government" aimed at thwarting the peace initiative in Sharm El-Sheikh, referring to the US president's 20-point Gaza plan announced in September 2025.

The plan includes a ceasefire, a prisoner exchange, a phased Israeli withdrawal, a transitional Palestinian administration and the reconstruction of Gaza.

Fahmy also urged Trump to stop repeated Israeli violations in occupied East Jerusalem and attacks against Palestinians in the occupied West Bank.

He accused the Israeli government of seeking to "completely eliminate the Palestinian presence" by expanding illegal settlements and continuing displacement plans.

The Arab League chief also called for "a swift return" to the understandings between the US and Iran and the resumption of negotiations aimed at ending the conflict, restoring regional stability, respecting the sovereignty of neighbouring countries and reopening Gulf and Red Sea waterways to safe navigation.
