Qatar has called for a regional security framework bringing Gulf countries and Iran together, saying the recent war should serve as a “wake-up call” for the region to strengthen cooperation and prevent further conflict.

Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani made the remarks on Sunday at the Qatar Economic Forum in New York, held on the sidelines of the 81st UN General Assembly.

“Iran is our neighbour,” Al Thani said, arguing that the Gulf region needs a framework ensuring that no country poses a threat to another.

He said Qatar and its regional partners were already working toward such an arrangement and urged Gulf states and Iran to develop stable relations.

“We have to act together responsibly as a region,” he said, adding that the recent conflict had challenged assumptions about security and stability and produced consequences extending beyond the Middle East.

Qatar pledges continued mediation

Al Thani said Qatar would continue its mediation efforts, maintain communication channels and work with regional and international partners to reduce tensions and support diplomatic agreements.

He said the recent crisis showed the need for regional arrangements that respect sovereignty and prevent recurring cycles of escalation.

Qatar has positioned itself as a mediator in several regional conflicts and has maintained communication channels with multiple parties during the latest crisis.

Doha unveils $60 billion investment pipeline

Alongside his security remarks, Al Thani announced the launch of Doha Investment, a new platform designed to manage and expand the Qatar Investment Authority’s domestic investment portfolio and increase private-sector participation.

Qatar expects to launch about $38.5 billion worth of infrastructure projects over the next five years, including public-private partnership projects, while separate real estate and hospitality projects are expected to attract $22.5 billion in private investment.

Together, the projects represent more than $60 billion in potential investment opportunities over five years, according to the Qatari government.

The Doha Investment platform is intended to support national companies, help startups expand, deepen capital markets and attract international capital and expertise, according to Qatar’s government.

Al Thani said Qatar would seek to combine public infrastructure spending with private capital and international expertise as the country works to strengthen economic resilience amid regional uncertainty.
