UK detains dozens of nail-salon workers to tackle modern slavery
There are an estimated 13,000 victims of modern slavery in Britain, defined as those paid below minimum wage and often held against their will, according to the country's government.
British immigration officers have raided nearly 300 nail salons and arrested 97 people for suspected immigration offences as part of Operation Magnify, a drive to tackle illegal work and modern slavery, the Home Office said this week.
But some critics believe the government's focus on slavery is simply cover for a crackdown on irregular migrants.
