London police arrested 636 people and seized dozens of weapons during the two-day Notting Hill Carnival, while one person died following a chase involving officers, authorities said on Tuesday.
The Metropolitan Police said 242 people were arrested on Sunday and another 394 on Monday during the event, described as Europe’s largest street festival.
Of the total arrests, 193 were made on approaches to the event, while the remainder took place within the carnival area, police said.
Offences included possession and supply of drugs, assaults, including attacks on emergency workers, weapons offences, sexual offences and public order violations.
Police said the use of live facial recognition technology was expanded this year, generating 214 alerts and leading to 121 arrests. Officers also stopped and spoke to 86 registered sex offenders.
Seven registered sex offenders were arrested for allegedly breaching their conditions or notification requirements, according to police.
Weapons seized
Stop-and-search operations resulted in 68 weapons being seized, including a handgun, the Metropolitan Police said.
Police said the measures formed part of a proactive policing operation during the carnival.
The event draws hundreds of thousands of people to west London each year and is one of the largest street festivals in Europe.
On Monday, police said a man had died after entering a canal off Kensal Road following a chase with officers who had stopped him from entering the event.
The Metropolitan Police said enquiries into the death were ongoing.
